leon, Mexico
leon was the first stop of my latin america trip. it’s a city named after a lion because its ferociously industrial, reminding me of south east asia a little! due to some bizarre illness i had a cough for weeks which sucked but i also managed to see what is was like living here by going to supermarkets like costco. the first thing that really surprised me is the cost of living. although its lower than japan, its not that much lower which made me look at the purchasing power and its not that much. explains why so many generations live in one house to make ends meet. even though everybody says mexico is dangerous im not sure i felt that in leon specifically. as a town there’s not that much to do low key since you need a car to get anywhere. i think the biggest thing for me was the concept of aguas frescas which is like a genre of sweetened water, and i really liked jamaica (which is hibiscus water) which was also everywhere. japanese people don’t eat sushi every day but certainly there’s tacos everywhere and i don’t know if im exaggerating if i say mexicans eat tacos every single day. we literally had tortillas come at every restaurant we went to.
